Homeopathy – Alternative medicine at its controversial best

Homeopathy involves treatments using highly diluted solutions, with the aim of triggering and enhancing the body’s immune system.  The principle of treatment is based on “like cures like”. This basically means that if any substance in large doses cause harm, the very same substance in much light (diluted) form can illicit an immune response.

Homeopathic medicines (remedies) are prepared by special pharmacies through a very precise process of succession and dilution. Although the principle of “like cures like” has been around as part of the treatment process since Hippocrates (460 – 377 BC), the current homeopathic form of treatment was introduced by Samuel Hahnemann approximately 200 yrs ago.

Homeopathy is based on two principles. The first one “like cures like” we have discussed to a certain extent. The next one is dilutions or law of minimum dose.  While preparing the dilutions, the solution is vigorously shaken. This is known as potentization. By the end of the process, there is very little or no substance left within the dilution. It is believed that the dilution of the substance along with the vigorous shaking creates an active component that kick starts the body’s natural healing process.

Homeopaths treat people based on personal and genetic medical history, emotional physical and mental symptoms and body type. This means that the treatments can be tailor made to suit an individual, which essentially is the way forward in the field of medicine. Personalized treatments , sounds fantastic doesn’t it?

Alternative medicine has been looked at with suspicious eyes, open your mind to the fact that most medicines treat (don’t cure) any disorder. They are basically symptomatic treatments as opposed to medicines that treat the actual cause. Alternative medicine at its core, tries to cure / treat the disease and not its symptoms.
